Dressing up Chester

Judy tower:

Chester is getting a face lift!  The City of Bakersfield along with Pacific Gas & Electric wanted to dress up Chester Ave.  One good way was to make murals on the vacant buildings. Who better then the Arts Council of Kern  to lead the project. It all started in November with the "Winter around the world" theme. Now the theme is Chester Ave. from 1898 - 2008 one hundred and ten years.  One building has ply-wood for windows that will be murals of a Train station and trolley car.  The vacant J C Penney building now has the look of downtown Bakersfield from 1898 till about the 1930s.  The image on the left is Arts Council member and muralist Judy Deems standing next to one of her murals on the J C Penney building.  Judy is the lead artist for this project. Click here for more images
